What I did:

We met with Angelina Ramos at Le Pain to interview her about personal stories and experiences with immigration.

What I learned:

We learned about the struggles of being an immigrant and the constant fear illegal immigrants live in. She also told us about families she knows that have to manage a very scary life in the U.S. She told us about when she worked in a shirt factory and had to defend herself from bad situations.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned about how not all rights are given in this country. Unfortunately, when Angelina was undocumented, she lived her life in fear of wondering if she would be deported. Because of ICE and deportation in this country, so many people have to live so cautiously and make sure they are acting as normal as any “true American” would. If all freedom rights were given, nobody would have to live in fear of being in this country. It was very sad to hear Angelina speak about two very young children she knows who have to hide if they hear any word of ICE being near them. I wonder why America is advertised as a “free country” when so many of the citizens are scared to be in it.
