  1. Re-Read the short article about the Universe of Obligation.  Answer all the questions about Universe of Obligation on the backside of our sheet.  This should be on a separate paper.

Due Tuesday:

NOTE:  WE ARE OUT TO HAVE 100% of us bring in a one-pound can of ham or a 14 ounce can of pink salmon for St. John’s Food Pantry. Don’t forget to get yours! Tomorrow is DEADLINE! Thank you — these will be in the Holiday Food Bags given out to St. Johns.  Thanks to Ruby G and Jasper for bringing in today!

  1. Complete a typed (or hand written if you do not have computer access) letter based on the following handout. This will help tie up our study of Reconstruction and Part Time Indian. Recon / Alexie Handout Link Recon&PartTime

 

  1. Holiday Reading Assignment: Pick your book and have an adult read the assignment and sign your sheet. It says due Friday, and I have given an extension until tomorrow, Tuesday. You must have your book in your hand by tomorrow, no matter what. HolidayReading09-10  I will be recording a list of the books that you choose.

Friday, December 11

Due Monday:

1. Be prepared to ask any final questions about the Retreat from Reconstruction that you have. We will have a written assessment in Core ALL 1.
2. FINISH Part-Time Indian. Enjoy! Also, you must read the interview with Ellen Forney, at the end of the book. We will have a final test on the book in class on Thursday 12/17. You will get information about the test in class on Tuesday.
3. Bring an Independent Book for Independent Reading in Core All 2.
4. Don’t forget a canned ham or salmon for our donation to St. Johns. If you want to bring both, great!
5. Holiday book is due in your hand on Tuesday! Also, by then you must have the Holiday book form completed with your parents’ signature.

Thursday, Dec 10

Due Friday:

Freedom’s Unfinished Revolution: Read pages 268-272 , and make notes on the those pages on the handout under the corresponding headings. Your chart should be completely filled out.

Also, choose the Holiday Book that you are going to read over the break and bring in a signed Holiday Book form tomorrow. You just need to read the book, a project will be assigned when we return.

Due Monday:

Quiz on Retreat from Reconstruction on Monday in Core ALL. You will be able to use your notes. I will check your notes prior to quiz and make sure they are in your own words! 🙂

Part Time Indian–finish the book–pages 196-230. Be sure to read the very last 8 pages of the book (after the discussion questions portion) “Interview with Ellen Forney,” the illustrator. We will have an in-class writing assessment and creative assessment on Thursday, 17th.  All students will be prepared to completed that as a final for the book.

**Begin formulating an opinion about why we have paired the novel Part-Time Indian with the Reconstruction Era. What are the thematic links between them? Speculate about what they might be in preparation for our culminating activity which is an in-class writing next week.

Due Wednesday:

A. Freedom’s Unfinished Revolution: Read pages 263-265, and make notes on the “Retreat from Reconstruction Grid” that you made in class.  If you were not here, the grid is basically a blank paper folded into 4 rectangles.  Each one has a title and notes for that section are put into the box with the corresponding title.

1. Writer’s Workshop, complete the Three-Line Timeline that you started in class.

2. You will also have other HW so please plan ahead!

  • Think about what Social Justice Issue you want to take on for the Social Justice Project, and keep asking around for contacts!

Wednesday, Dec 2

Due Thursday:

Social Justice Project Launch: Find 3 Social Justice  organizations whose missions interest you in NYC, and write their contact information on the chart as directed.

Do not put the same contact organizations as your friends just for credit. The point here is to gather as many organizations as possible so that ALL eighth graders will have a database with which to find organizations that they can work with.
