Forms of Energy
What is Energy?
Energy is the ability to do work. It is what makes matter move or change.
Energy helps you walk across the street, throw a ball into the air, vacuum your house, watch television and ride the bus to school. Some of the above are possible because we have figured out how to convert energy from one form into another and use it to do our work.
Types of energy
There are many types of energy, but they can be categorized into 2 types:
- Potential energy
- Kinetic energy
Potential Energy has 4 forms:
- Chemical energy – the energy stored in the bonds between atoms that holds molecules together
- Nuclear energy – the energy stored in the nucleus of the atom that holds the nucleus together
- Gravitational energy – the energy an object has because of its position or height
- Elastic energy – or stored mechanical energy, is energy stored in an object by the application of force
Kinetic Energy has 5 forms:
- Motion energy – is the movement of objects or substances from one place to another
- Electrical energy – the energy from the flow of electric charge (movement of electrons in one direction)
- Thermal energy – or heat energy, the internal energy of a substance due to the vibration of atoms and molecules making up the substance
- Radiant energy – or light energy, or electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves
- Sound energy – the movement of energy through substances in the form of compression waves

SIMULATION: Energy Transfers
- Circuit Simulator
- INSTRUCTIONS:
- 1- Use the circuit simulator to experiment making different types of energy transfers.
- 2- Make an energy transfer diagram in your notebook every time you make a successful circuit combination. Should have at least 6.
- 3- What are different ways that you can stop the flow of energy?
- Make a new page in your notebook and title it: “Ways to stop the flow of energy.
- Add at least 3 different way to stop or greatly reduce the flow of energy.
- Take a screenshot of what you did.
- Explain why you think it stops or reduces the flow of energy.
- 4- Energy Transfers Around Us!
- Find example of energy transfers around your home.
- Make a new page in your notebook and title it: “Energy Transfers Around Us”.
- Pick objects around your home and create energy transfer diagrams on that page.
- Take a picture of the item and add it to the page.
- Add the Input energy and the Output Energy
- Find example of energy transfers around your home.

- Great short simulation to help you practice identifying the different forms of energy in a situation. Please note that in the simulation they use the terms heat and light energy but you are expected to use thermal and radiant energy instead which is a little more advanced. They also talk about kinetic for all motion energy.
