1) Read chapter 1 in To Be A Slave, pages 28-38.

2) Choose three passages (from the slave narratives or Lester’s own writing) that strike you as important.  For each passage respond in these ways:

Who is saying/writing the passage? What page number is     the passage on? Why did you choose the passage? How         does the passage help you to understand the experience of         slavery in America?
