Minutes Middle School Meeting
February 15, 2011
Gabrielle Keller:

  • Pennies For Patients: Collecting change throughout February for Leukemia and Lymphoma. Each middle school homeroom has ‘Unicef’ type boxes for all children to take home and collect change. This is a competitive collection meaning that the homeroom that collects the most change will get a prize (usually a pizza party).
  • Project CICERO: Monday March 7th – Thursday March 10th, LREI will be collecting gently used books, from picture books through appropriate High School reading books to be donated to NYC Public School Libraries.
  • Earth Day: On April 22, 2011, Tree Pits will be planted in front of the Sixth Avenue entrance by parent volunteers. Parents are encouraged to volunteer their labor and also collect for plant purchases. The NYC Parks and Recreation Department can supply the tools but not the labor or plants for the area.

Mark Silberberg:

  • Middle School ‘Gender Spectrum:’ The question and issues regarding gender were started 2-3 weeks ago by Sandra Chapman, the Director of Diversity and Community. From various adolescent issues meetings and guest speakers the kids and teachers have engaged in a variety of discussions regarding gender, what does it mean and where do the boundaries exist or not exist. The topics with the guest speaker began with questions about the notions of binary gender rolls and explored the natural world where various species of animals demonstrate variation with respect to binary notions of assumed gender rolls, and explored various global cultures where multiple gender classifications exist i.e. some South Pacific and Indonesian cultures. These conversations will continue with faculty and students throughout the year.
  • ERB’S : The ERB tests are taking place in the Middle School this week on Tuesday Feb. 15 – Thursday Feb.17. There were two sections on Tuesday with one section each on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
  • Literary Workshops: There will be a variety of workshops Wednesday afternoon
  • Middle School Olympics will be held on Thursday afternoon. There will be eight teams of kids from the various middle school grades with each team wearing their ‘team color’. Please make sure that your child knows and wears a t-shirt with their teams appropriate color. Mark or Gaby will send a reminder .
  • Friday will be a normal school day.
  • Monday and Tuesday, February 21st, and 22nd – Presidents’ Weekend – School closed
  • Black History Assembly: Wednesday February 23, 2011 – Margret Andrews will lead an assembly with selected students focused on Black History Month. Each week since February 1st, Margret has been touching on various facts in the weekly middle school meetings on Black History. Having the ‘month’ highlighted rather than just one day brings greater depth and understanding to Black History.
  • 5th Grade Egyptian Tomb Museum – Thursday March 17, 2011, this will be a daytime activity where parents can schedule a time to get a tour of the museum. Parent volunteers will be needed for set up on Wednesday after school and to disassemble the museum at the end of the school day on Thursday.
  • LREI New Web Site: A new web site, along with exisiting Facebook and Twitter pages, is in the works for LREI! Laura Hahn, Publications manager gave a brief guided tour of the site that is going to be the ‘New Face’ of LREI to not only the outside world of prospective parents, but for the existing LREI community as well. The web site will have links to Facebook and Twitter with daily events listed. Organizations that are linked to LREI can also be accessed such as Glad, NYC Public Libraries, etc.. Parents will be able to personalize their settings to have only pertinent information sent to them. The web site will have general information open to the public, but personal information will require parental sign in. The planning of some kind of ‘Launch’ is in the works and all parents and the entire LREI community will be notified when this event will occur. There might be parent tutorials offered so that parents can see how to navigate the website and ask questions along the way. The kind of information that will appear on the public pages and the private pages are still being decided on. In the future items like the digital classroom will be on the website making it easier to view all teacher blogs and homework assignments.

Minutes Middle School Meeting
November 16, 2010
  • This Friday 11/19 — the 7th grade DISC dance will be held at the high school beginning at 6PM.  Permission slips came home with your 7th grader yesterday, along with a request for $5.
  • Wed 12/15 — the 7th grade Colonial Museum project, at 6PM in the classrooms, followed by a potluck in the cafeteria.  An online sign up sheet for the potluck will be forthcoming.
  • 1-Can, 1-Child / Canned Food Drive for St. John’s Pantry: beginning this Thursday and until Wed 11/24, the Middle School is collecting canned goods.  The goal is 100% student participation of at least 1 can per child, but more is of course welcome.  Students will be bagging and delivering the cans after the Thanksgiving break.
  • Book Week 12/6-10 Author visits for each grade will take place mostly on Friday 12/10.  The annual Literary Evening is Wed 12/7 at 7PM (tickets will go on sale the week before).  The Book Fair will be held from the afternoon of Wed 12/8 through Friday 12/10.  Look for credit card pre-authorization forms to come home with your child: you can authorize him/her to purchase books at the fair; there’s a $25 minimum for credit card — no AmEx.  You can also send a check for a lesser amount with your child.
  • Tues 12/14 — the Winter Concert at NYU at 6PM
  • Progress Reports — Questions or comments about the process can be directed to Mark.  Individual questions by subject may be directed to the specialists.
  • Other subjects:
    • Lateness — A student is marked late when s/he arrives at school after 8:20.  S/he is marked late for homeroom after 8:21.  If your child is at school on time but stops to see a specialist or the nurse, please remind her/him to get a note so s/he won’t be marked late for homeroom.
    • The computer lab is open on school mornings from 8-8:15AM for access to computers and for printing school work, and after school until 5:30PM.
    • Gabrielle noted that the Coat Drive was a success: over 100 coats were sent to Hudson Guild. Thank you to those who participated.
    • Beautifying Little Red Square: an ongoing discussion on the subject of planting the tree wells in front of the school on 6th Avenue.  Because of budget constraints, the Parks Department can no longer offer seasonal plants (although the department may be able to do the planting if the plants are supplied).  Members of the school community continue to express interest about volunteering to organize and/or underwrite the project.  One idea is to do a 2-season annual planting of hardy, long-lasting flowers.

AIDS WALK – May 16th – Sunday

  • Gabrielle announced she is again organizing this years’ walk. 5th & 6th graders will need a designated adult to walk with but 7th & 8th graders can walk in the group. She is hoping that an 8th grader “social justice” group will help to organize the students so there is a LARGE group representing LREI.
  • Students and parents should perhaps be made more aware, if they’re not, that AIDS is still a very important issue and that the AIDS walk is a great way of showing support as well as raising money for research etc.

April 20th & April 21st – Adolescent Issues Parent Nights

  • Agenda to follow from Mark – also requests for areas of concern and or interest will be made by email to the parent’s prior to the evening.

April 29th – Middle School Art Show – This years’ evening event will be well publicized and parents will be encouraged to attend with their students.

  • Added to the traditional art show will be highlights from the Performance Electives that the 7th & 8th graders have been attending.
  • They will be performing in various venues throughout the building – such as Jazz Band, vocals, drama, etc.

  • Specialists sign up sheets can be accessed through Mark’s blog.
  • Parent’s are encouraged to sign up with specialists, especially if they have specific concerns.
  • Report cards should be emailed out by 4/13 Tuesday at the latest so parents and students have time to review before conferences begin.

There was a lively conversation about the validity of 4th quarter narratives on reports written by students ( with their instructors help ) versus an end of the year final report from their teachers. As of now, the reports will remain with teacher’s commenting appearing on the 1st and 3rd reports.

Teacher/Instructor Updates:

Susannah Flicker  – learning specialist is on maternity leave and her replacement Mala Beckoff is already in place.

Steve Neiman  – will be retiring after 32 years at LREI. Imagine all the images Steve has accumulated over these many years. A search for a new technology teacher is underway.

End of Year Teacher Gifts – A vigorous conversation including the frustrations of parent reps in collecting money from families for these gifts.

  • Frustration included figuring out the money, gift, etc. We talked about the $25 maximum requested amount from each family. Some families want to give more while others can’t afford to give, but would like to. It can become awkward for some parent reps.
  • It was suggested that, perhaps, Mark or Kasey send out an email to parents’ letting them know that their individual reps will be contacting them for this and their timely reaction would be greatly appreciated. It was stressed to reps if they are having any difficulties they should contact Mark directly.
  • It was clarified that each grade is responsible for their 4 advisors as well as assigned specialists and that the specialists gifts should be different than the advisors.

In Middle School each specific grade has a theme end of year potluck. Check the online calendar for your class potluck date.

Middle School Parent Rep Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, September 15

Welcome back to school. Principal Mark Silberberg announced that our Middle School is the largest it has ever been…157 students!

General Information:

  • Red gets greener…so there is NO ART CALENDAR this year. The calendar for the entire school year can be accessed on the school web site.
  • The school directory is being finalized, and will soon be available as a PDF which will be emailed to all parents. Any last minute changes should be sent to Mary Shea at mshea@lrei.org

IMPORTANT SCHOOL POLICY UPDATE: Parents are urged to review the new Internet Policy Acceptable Use revisions to the Student/Family Handbook. These revisions can also be accessed on line via a link on the Middle School blog. In brief, communication on electronic devices that takes place outside of school, but that have a direct and negative impact on individual members of the LREI Community and/or the larger LREI community at large are considered within the scope of the policy. Please review these important guildelines with your child.

Middle School Announcements:

  • Middle School Dances: No dates were announced. LREI MS Dances are FREE and open to all middle schoolers.
  • DISC Dances (Downtown Independent School Cooperative) open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The cost for these dances is $ 6. A week before the dance families will get a permission slip for their child to attend.
  • The Student Activity Period is on Fridays from 2:15 – 3:00. There are a variety of activities that students can choose from, that are run by the Middle School Faculty.
  • Parents are reminded to check the blog for information regarding Intramural sports, Middle School Band, Middle School Chorus, Robotics and other activities open to Middle School Students.
  • MS Spanish teacher and dean Gabrielle Keller spoke briefly about the plans for schoolwide community service for this year. We will continue our ongoing affiliation with St. John’s Pantry. Once a semester, advisory groups will go to the pantry on Tuesday mornings to help bag food and on Wednesdays to distribute the bagged items. Gabrielle has also arranged to get plants from the gardeners in Washington Square Park, which students will plant in Little Red Square.
  • Judo Club, open to all Middle School students takes place on Fridays from 3:15 to 5:30 at the Thompson Street Gym. Contact PE teacher Larry Kaplan about possibly getting a used Judo uniform for your child. There may be a limited number available from families who have donated them.

LREI is a member of NYC-Parents in Action (NYC-PIA – http://www.parentsinaction.org/). NYC-PIA provides parenting education, information and a communications network to help parents prepare their children and teenagers to cope with social pressures and to make sound choices towards a future free of alcohol and drug abuse. A link to their calendar of events is on the Middle School blog.

A parent suggested that students write down their homework assignments during class (this is the school policy) and not rely on the Digital Classroom link on the website, since the site may not be updated when your child is ready to do their homework.

Middle School Parent Rep Meeting, May 19, 2009

Summer Reading and Math
Assignments will be in this week’s blog. In addition to the regular reading and assignment, all Middle School students will read “Three Cups of Tea.” The school will provide a copy of the book for each student and advisory groups will discuss the book in the fall and use it to frame some cross-divisional activities. Like last summer, families will get a letter with some ideas for “doing math” during the summer. If there are areas within the curriculum that your child needs to review, teachers’ will recommend ways to engage in these topics. Reading lists and teacher letters will come out later and Mark will send a link via e-mail.
