The aim of our experience in music class is to explore every facet of music and to learn about the expressive possibilities of this art form by actually creating our own musical works. Some of these works will be done as a class, some in small groups and others will be individual compositions. Along the way we will encounter musical practices of the past and present and exam the choices that music makers from a variety of cultures have made. In addition to performing music vocally and instrumentally, we will create our own works that use the same musical techniques. Instead of following along to what someone else wrote, we will choose to use these techniques as a way to express our own ideas and feelings! The LREI community will have chance to hear student work through periodic Podcasts coming soon!

First off, we will begin to explore how musicians use timbre. Timbre is the musical term that describes the character or color of a sound. It is one of the major factors in the expressiveness of music.
Students should be sure to visit the following links for homework assingments and information on class projects:
“What is Music?” page is a place for all students to give their own definition of music. Together we will see how music means many different things to different people. Be sure to watch John Cage’s Water Walk.
Click here to view our first composition that explores the use of rhythm. The assignment was to plan a composition that used unusual vocal sounds. The piece had to have a regular recurring pulse with some pulses having one sound, some having several sounds and some having silence.
