The goal of our project was to create a working Google Site in which we compile information on Asian-American/Asian activists who had an effect on America. We wanted to pursue this because we both identify as Asian-American and wanted to learn more about our heritage and our races’ impact on America. This site can also be used as a resource for future High ExpectAsian participants as well as the broader school community.

Trimester 2 Project Update:

So far, we have been conducting research on Asian American history and putting it into a timeline. To start off, we researched the origins of the term, “Asian-American,” and what it means to be Asian-American, especially in today’s political climate. From there, we started to research the history of Asians in America based on stories, people, and events that we had seen/found online, but then realized that we didn’t know enough background history of Asians in America to understand other events we wanted to learn about Then, we talked to Preethi and Joy and came up with the idea of creating a timeline of Asians in America, starting with the Chinese Exclusion Act. This timeline allows us to view the events of Asians in America chronologically and better understand the influence that Asians had on America. We have begun to research early Asian American immigration and presence. We have researched Chinese immigration the most so far, given that they were the first to form larger communities in the US.

From here, we would like to continue working on this timeline in T3 in order to get a more comprehensive understanding of Asians in America in order to hopefully start creating our website in T3.

T3 PROJECT PROPOSAL

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

We want to continue our honors project from Trimester 2, in order to continue our research on Asian American History. We want to continue to put together a timeline and gain a better understanding of the chronological events in Asian American history.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

We will draw on LREI’s value of critical thinking by taking the initiative to continue our learning and applying it to our own experiences as Asian Americans. Not only are we learning about history, but we are also analyzing it and discussing its significance in relation to today and our identities.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

We are hoping to create a site with the timeline and other information we found. We also want to use the site as a resource when leading the Asian Affinity group next year.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

We don’t know how much research we want to do before starting the site, but the research will hopefully be done by the middle of Tri 3. We will also probably build the site as we go.

When do you plan on meeting?
Thursday xblock

T2 PROJECT PROPOSAL

Project by: Sophie Reif (11th Grade), Dakota Law (11th Grade)
Project Advisor: Preethi Thomas-McKnight and Joy Piedmont
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Karyn (Sophie) and Catherine (Dakota)

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

The goal of our project is to create a working Google Site in which we compile information on Asian-American/Asian activists who had an effect on America. We want to pursue this because we both identify as Asian-American and want to learn more about our heritage and our races’ impact on America. This site would also be used as a resource for future High ExpectAsian participants as well as the broader school community.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

We will have to be creative while making the Google Site in order to convey our information in an accessible way for our audience. We are also being good citizens and contributing to our community through creating this because we would be compiling information to then be shared with everyone in order to further their (and our) education about Asians in America.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

We would create a Google Site that would be shared with the community. However, it would be a WORKING Google Site in which we would still be editing and adding to it.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

Researching and compiling information in January
Creating/working on the site February – March

KEYNOTE: WE PLAN TO DO THIS THIRD TRIMESTER TOO SO WE WILL NOT BE FINISHED WITH THE WHOLE SITE IN MARCH

When do you plan on meeting?
Thursday during x-block

  1. UPDATE: This Trimeter we’ve mostly focused on doing more research and filling in the timeline we made. We realized that creating a timeline of ALL the basic points in Asian American history was a little too ambitious for one Trimester. So, we decided to focus on a timeline for Chinese American history. We’ve met pretty much met every Thursday, reviewing our research and beginning to put our information into our website. We’re also slowly learning the basics of making a functional website! We still hope that this project will continue into next year, and hopefully, we can share it with our peers in the near future.
