Project by: Navah Goldblum (10th Grade)
Project Advisor: Meghan Astrachan
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Preethi Thomas-McKnight

Based on one of the scenes I wrote during my Trimester 1 drama class, I wanted to write a play. I wanted to learn more about my passion for acting and writing and possibly about directing. I have always enjoyed acting and creative writing, but I had written a play before.

T3 PROJECT PROPOSAL

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

I am extending my honors project from last trimester. I was writing a play based on a scene I wrote during drama first trimester but didn’t get to finish writing the whole thing. I hope to finish the play and form it into a real, doable play.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

My project would be very creative because I would be writing my own play based on a scene I also wrote. I will be able to create a story and hopefully, eventually, get to see it come to life.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

The finished product of my project would be a fully completed play with multiple scenes, characters, and stage directions. I could also have a performance of one or two scenes similar to a preview, ideally, in the future, I would love to perform it but that would require more time and be a biger project, including more people than me.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

I would continue writing scenes as I have been this past trimester. Once I am done writing the play I will edit it and read it all together to see how it flows.

When do you plan on meeting?
on Fridays during lunch

My project would be very creative because I would be writing my own play based on a scene I also wrote. I will be able to create a story and hopefully, eventually, get to see it come to life. My play is about two kids in high school who get pressured into dating each other by their friend groups but are both in the closet.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

First I will map out the plot of the play event by event and create a character list with background on the important character. Then I will begin the writing process and edit and revise along the way. Once I am near the end of halfway done I will pick 1 or 2 scenes that can be performed and will start rehearsing. Lastly, I will make the final touches and perform the chosen scenes and explain what the play is about.

When do you plan on meeting?
Fridays during x block and or during lunches

  1. Proposal approved.
Navah, I look forward to continue to work with you on this and see your play come together.

  2. I have four scenes in the second half of the play and have about three more to write until I finish!

  3. I have one more scene to write and then I can start the editing process!

  4. Over this trimester, I was able to finish writing my play! It started as one scene I wrote during the first-trimester drama, and I started expanding that scene into a play during second-trimester. When I didn’t finish first-trimester, I extended to honors project to this trimester. If I had not decided to make this play an honors project, I never would have had a completed play. I would have gotten stuck somewhere and forgotten about the project. There was a point where I was a little over halfway finished and felt stuck. If I hadn’t turned writing this play into an honors project that is where I would have abandoned my work. Thankfully I finished! Now I can say I have successfully written a real play! Through this process, I learned how to develop characters and give them all life stories and well rounded individual personalities. I am thrilled with my finish product. Meghan was a fantastic teacher to work with. She helped nudge me when I was stuck and really let me have the experience of writing my own script. I have elarned so much through the project and I am very happy with how it came out.
