Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

imgres

Sophie is a regular 17 or 18 year old girl when all of a sudden the Witch of the Waste turns her into a 90 year old woman. I read Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. The main characters are Sophie and Howl. Sophie is a normal girl, and Howl is a wizard. The book is about a 17 or 18 year old girl who gets turned into an 90 woman by the Witch of the Waste, so she runs away. She finds Howl’s Moving Castle and she starts living there. The setting is in a lot of places, but it mostly takes place inside the castle.

Sophie is very nosy, curious and brave. She is nosy because she is going around the castle and looking out of windows cleaning things and looking at other people’s stuff. She is curious because the front door has different colors that they can spin this knob and go to different places. She was looking at all the colors on the doors and was really curious what the black went to. She is brave because she had the courage to run away from her home without saying goodbye or telling her family what had happened. One thing that I thought was really interesting was the front door. You can use the door to go to 4 places that I can remember: Ingary, Kingsbury, Wales and the Moving castle. Another thing about this book is Calcifer. Calcifer is a fire demon. He keeps the castle moving and makes the hot water. Calcifer is under a curse too. Like Sophie, he is not allowed to go out of the fireplace. Only enough to see which way to move the castle. Sophie and Calcifer make a deal that if she breaks the curse on him, he will break the curse on her.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I think it is my favorite book now! It’s really interesting how there is magic. Diana Wynne Jones really described the magic, so you can really imagine what’s happening. I would recommend this book because it keeps you reading non stop. You have to keep reading until you get to a stopping point. It gets you really exited about what is going to happen next and the chapters end in cliff hangers. I think I want to read it again. I think people who really like magic should read this book! I think Harry Potter is like this book because there is also a lot of magic in Harry Potter. I rate this book FIVE STARS out of one to five.

The Meaning of Maggie By: Megan Jean Sovern

The name of the book I read is The Meaning of Maggie by, Megan Jean Sovern. The book is about a girl named Maggie, Maggie is the main character. The book takes place in a modern town outside Atlanta. Maggie has two older teenage sisters their names are Layla and Tiffany. Layla is their parent’s favorite. Maggie’s mom and dad used to be hippies.  (Hippie’s are laid back people. They believe in peace. They also wear funky clothes.) Her dad has a disease called Multiple Sclerosis. It is when your legs and arms fall asleep and it is hard for you to control your limbs. Whenever something goes wrong they always says “Pull up your bootstraps”(Family motto).

Maggie dreams about becoming president. She is now one year closer to becoming it, going to college, being able to vote, and getting a tattoo. The book is written in Maggie’s perspective. Maggie Mayfield is writing a memoir about the time between her 11th birthday and her 12th.

Maggie is strong.  When stuff happens to her dad she tries to be strong. She tries not to show him that she is really worried. Maggie is also a fun person. Her dad is very sick but still she has fun. She doesn’t let that ruin her fun. Last but not least Maggie is smart. She has won Student of The Month multiple times. She is her teacher’s favorite because she is so smart. Unlike other kids she wishes that there were no vacations from school. But the thing she wishes for most is that her dad gets better. An interesting part of the book is when Maggie’s mom tells Tiffany that Maggie is her favorite and Layla is their dad’s favorite. Another part of the book I found interesting is when Phyllis and Donny come over. They are Maggie’s mom and dad’s old hippie friends. Maggie is so scared of them but after a while she ends up liking them. When Phyllis and Donny come one of them has a motorcycle and he takes the dad for a ride. It is funny because since her dad limbs are asleep they had to use a bungee cord to tie her dad to Donny so he wouldn’t fall off.

I really, really, really, loved this book. One thing that was cool about it was that there would sometimes be a sentence and a really small number would be at the end of it. At the end of the page the same number was there but Maggie is either explaining a little more or giving you her opinion. It was like she was just thinking. For example: “Well. some of us guessed. Some of us just10 knew the answers.”

Then at the end of the page . . . 10.  Me.

I would definitely recommend this book. It is sad and has some serious topics. But it is still a fun book. I think anyone can have fun reading this book. Some people might have more fun than others reading this. When you are reading this book you will not be able to put it down. You might or might not like how the author talks to from Maggie’s perspective (but I do). 5 STARS

(1 the worst- 5 the best)

Flush by Carl Hiaasen

imgres

Flush is a novel written by Carl Hiaasen. The main characters are Paine Underwood, Noah Underwood, Abby Underwood, Donna Underwood, Lice Peeking, Dusty Muleman, and Shelly. The book is about Paine, Abby, Noah, Lice, and Shelly trying to stop Dusty and his crew from dumping the Coral Queen’s holding tank into the sea. The story takes place in the Florida Keys.

I really enjoyed the parts when Noah and Abby would sneak into the woods by the dock to spy on the Coral Queen. I liked this part because once they encountered one of Dusty’s crew members. When the guy saw Noah and Abby sneaking around he grabbed Abby and Abby took a bite into the man’s arm. The man screamed so loud that Noah said you could hear him from Miami. Another important part of the book was when Noah snuck on to the Coral Queen and busted Dusty Muleman. The main character Noah Underwood is brave because he risks his life to bust the Coral Queen. He’s intelligent because he came up with the plan to take down Dusty Muleman. He’s also very determined to succeed because he does not want to fail like his father when his father sunk the Coral Queen and got thrown in jail. Just like Noah, his father wanted to sink the Coral Queen because they cared about the sea life and didn’t want them to get sick.

I really enjoyed reading Flush by Carl Hiaasen because of the humor and the plot. The book is easy to read because of the suspense. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure and humorous stories. Carl Hiaasen’s other books and movies are similar to Flush because they all are funny and suspenseful and take place in Florida. I would give this book four stars because I really liked reading it.

Fortunately, The Milk by Neil Gaiman

81SYh4ybu1LThe book I read is called Fortunately,The Milk, by Neil Gaiman. The main character is the dad, they only call him dad and he has no other name. The book is mainly about the dad’s journey of getting milk, but it is much more interesting than it sounds. The book takes place in a bunch of different places. Two of the places are their house and a hot air balloon.

One thing that is really interesting in the  book are the pictures. One interesting picture are the wumpires they are really important they show how they look and what was happening to the dad. They are really detailed and interesting they are always very creative and they tell a lot of the story. The pictures are not something you see everyday because they are so unusual. I also thought that the wumpires were really cool and a little freaky, they eat ‘viggly vorms’! In the picture of the wumpires they are described like creepy and hairy and the little one is kinda cute. But they have buck teeth to very pointy teeth they need to go to the dentist ahh I don’t want to spoil it though. They also meet other cool creatures but you have to read about them so read the book!!! The dad is protective because he always wants to protect the milk for his kid’s cereal and his tea. He is also brave because he goes through crazy experiences and meets many wacky creatures, and he’s not so scared or terrified. He is very adventures because of all the journeys he goes with Professor Steg. He is also happy at the end of the book (I don’t want to spoil anything).

I loved the book so much. It is the best book in the whole world because everything about it is awesome. It is awesome because the pictures and how much wackiness there is and a little bit mysterious at the end. Hope you like it if you read it, I know I did! I recommend this book to everyone because it is so so amazing. Some books that are like this are the Roald Dahl books like The Witches and lots more. They are the same  because of the picture and the story. Out of a 1-5 I would give it 5!

The Terrible Two’s by Mac Barnett and Jory John

22509955I read a book called The Terrible Two’s by Mac Barnett and Jory John. The main characters’ names are Miles and Niles. Miles moves to a monotonous town called Yawnee Valley. It’s a quiet town and it’s known for one thing – cows. Miles hates it in Yawnee Valley and the worst part about moving there is he has to leave his school where he’s the class prankster and he’s good at it. At Yawnee Valley’s school he plans to be the new class prankster but they already have one. He wants to take the pranksters spot but the prankster that’s already at the school wants to make an alliance with Miles but he resists. When Miles finally  wants to work with Niles (,the school prankster.) They plan to pull of the biggest prank Yawnee Valley has ever seen. The book takes place in Yawnee valley.

Some things in the book that I really liked were the way they improvised when they were in the middle of pranks. Like when Miles was trying to distract some teachers he already thought of how to distract them. He used cupcakes but one teacher was on a diet so he quickly improvised and added something that the teacher might be able to eat. Also they were competitive but they weren’t being rude at the same time like when Miles told Niles that he wasn’t trying to prank him hard enough he said it in a respectful way. They also did a lot of planning like Miles had a notebook and Niles had a closet where they kept their prank idea. Three adjectives I would use to describe Niles and Miles are troubleshooters, a little inconsiderate and  a little mean. Troubleshooters because they are thinking their pranks through like when Niles thinks about how he’s going to make his next prank does a lot of thinking  and troubleshooting. A bit inconsiderate because I don’t think they think about the other person feelings when they get pranked. Like when Miles tried taking Niles hard work and replacing it with something that might get him in trouble. They’re also a little mean because some of the pranks were over kill and might be a little dangerous like the first prank Niles committed in the book and and the prank they did at the end. It was really cool but dangerous.

I liked this book because it had cool prank like parking the principal’s car on the steps of the school. I also liked all the stuff about cows. I would recommend it to people that like pranks and like cows or even people that  like competitive books. It was very unique and I haven’t read a book like it before. Miles kind of reminded me of Puck from the sisters grimm. I give it… four stars!

Sideways Stories From Wayside School By Louis Sachar

The book tha9780380698714_p0_v1_s260x420t I read was Sideways Stories From Wayside School by Louis Sachar. This is the first book in the Wayside school series. This book has 30 stories about the students in Mrs. Jewls class. I will tell you about the story I liked the most, it was Maurecia’s chapter. The setting of the book is in Wayside School.

One of the most important things about this book is that Wayside School was built sideways. It was supposed to be only one floor high with 30 classrooms on the ground. Instead the school was built 30 floors high and 1 classroom on 1 floor. I would say that Mauricia is tough because she can beat any boy in her class. She is also a person with a short attention span because she loves ice cream and she gets tired of it quickly. She is also popular because everyone likes her ice cream flavor the best which means everybody liked her.

I liked the book because of all the funny and imaginative things in it. For example in DeeDee’s chapter she was playing with a yellow ball that when you kicked it it went the opposite direction. I would recommend this book if you want to read a book with a lot of imagination. There is a show of wayside school but I don’t think it is on TV, I think that it is only on youtube. I have only seen one episode of the show and it was different than the book because in the book Mrs. Gorf was the teacher before Mrs. Jewls and in the show Mrs. Gorf was a sub. I would give the book 5 stars. If I needed to know something about a character and I went to the wrong page, I would continue reading it and not stop.

Blubber by Judy Blume

9780440407072_xlgThe book that I  read is called Blubber it is written by Judy Blume. The main character’s name is Jill. The book is about Jill and a few other girls bullying this one girl named Linda. There are many settings in this book but the main one is school.

One part of the book I found interesting is when Jill stands up to Wendy another girl in the book. I found that interesting because Jill was always a little scared of her in a way. Another thing that I found interesting was that in a lot of books the main character is the nice one but in this book the main character is not nice to the person that is being bullied. I also really like this book because it is funny in a way that you would really have to understand the book. Sometimes you have to dig for the funniness. I would say that Jill is kind of a troublemaker at times. An example of this is when Jill and her best friend cracked eggs in a mans mailbox on halloween. She also can be mean, like when she and her friends were throwing Linda’s food around. But she is also nice to her friends and family she is nice because she sticks up for her best friend when Wendy calls her something really mean.

I really enjoyed this book because I thought it was really funny and exciting. I also thought the book was a little mean but when you read this book you get to know what the person that is getting bullied feels like. I would really recommend this book for everyone. If you like funny books you should read it. If you like books that are short but have a lot of meaning you would like this book.I love this book. Other books that are a lot like this book are A Fourth Grade Nothing and Double Fudge that whole series is funny and a little more exciting than this book they are written by the same author also. I would give this book five stars. I have already read Blubber twice and I would read it again for a third time. I love this book.

The Elf of Union Square by Jan Carr

imgres

I read The Elf of Union Square by Jan Carr. From the title you can figure out that the main character is a elf and that the book takes place in Union Square. The elf’s name is Hiram and he has lived in Union Square Park for awhile. Hiram doesn’t like it that people are happy in the newly cleaned-up park so he has rigged Union Square with all sorts of boobytraps such as soap on the monkey bars and doo-doo in the walkways. A 10-year-old boy named Jack thinks something is going on in the park and decides to figure out what the deal is. He gets help from a reporter from The New York Times named Will. Hiram has a diabolical plan to get everyone in Union Square to fight and to yell at each other. He gets help with his plan from lots of rats who live in the park. Hiram’s main helper is a rat named Knut. Knut is especially good at soaping because he runs fast.

An important part in the book involves Hiram’s hat. It is important because the hobo named Lincoln (he’s called that because he thinks he is Abraham Lincoln) says that he’s seen Hiram before. To stop Lincoln from telling everyone more about him, Hiram puts a piece of soap in Lincoln’s pocket to frame him. A policewoman asks Lincoln to empty his pockets and when Lincoln does he finds the soap he didn’t know he had. Lincoln gets arrested. Hiram is mean spirited because he just wants people to fight and yell at each other. Hiram hides in a restaurant called Fare in the Square where all the kids hang out and he floods all the toilets with toilet paper when the kids are in the bathroom. The restaurant manager hates this and throws everyone out. Hiram is also very grumpy. He never listens to anybody. When Knut asks Hiram where he was born, Hiram cuts him off. But Hiram also develops a soft side in working with Knut. When Hiram figures out that there is rat poison in the park, he realizes that rats are dying so he runs to find Knut to make sure he is safe. Hiram is clever because he’s been putting boobytraps for years at Union Square Park and has never been caught.

I liked this book because it was funny and dumb. It was funny because who doesn’t want to read about people stepping in dog doo-doo? That part was pretty dumb , too. It’s also dumb because you don’t think of elves being friends with rats (and you don’t think of them talking, either). I would recommend this book to people who like humor and fictional characters. Also, people who like history might enjoy this book because it talks about Union Square from a long time ago. I think it’s similar to a TV show on the Disney Channel because it’s funny but not inappropriate. Otherwise, it would relate to Cartoon Network. I would rate this book 3 stars because it wasn’t my absolute favorite or even close to being one of my favorites.

The Terrible Two by Jory John and Mac Barnett

22509955

The book I read is called The Terrible Two by Jory John and Mac Barnett.

The two main characters are Miles and Niles. The book is mainly about a kid named Miles who was a huge prankster at his old school but has to move to a new school in a very monotonous place called Yawnee Valley. Another bad part about Yawnee valley is that the school Miles is gonna go to already has a prankster and a really good one. The most exciting thing there is cows. They have a lot of cows!

The setting takes place in Miles’s school sometime around the time we’re living in.

One part that I really liked was the time when Miles and Niles formed an alliance after being prankster enemies. They would make huge pranks at each other but then they came together to make even bigger pranks but on other people. I would say that my favorite part was when Miles and Niles made the biggest prank in the history of pranks. That prank was to take all the cows in Yawnee valley and put them into the school. The Principal’s name is Principal Barkin and he is so mean. He has never canceled school ever and got so mad when he found out what happened to the school. But the prank was so good that he had to close school for the first time ever in Yawnee valley. Another hysterical part was when Niles tried to pie Miles when he opened his locker. The problem was Miles read his mind and switched with a different kid who hated pie. And he loved the pie and that is why it was so funny. An adjective I would use to describe Miles is creative. Creative because he thinks of the craziest pranks. For example he could be right behind you right changing your hair gel with glue. Another adjective I would use to describe him is independent. Independent because he does his pranks alone until of course him and Niles team up. The third adjective I would use to describe him is impressive. Impressive because he is a kid and thinks of these genius pranks and trust me it’s hard to make a really good prank like him.

I definitely recommend this book. It’s hilarious and gives you amazing ideas if you want to prank someone. This book is a little like the movie Home Alone because the ludicrous pranks.

I would give this book four stars which means I really liked it.

Big Nate Goes For Broke, Lincoln Peirce

51JKBRNUFsL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_Nate is a normal kid. Well not normal, he knows, unlike most people, he was born to be great. People just don’t know it yet. He invented the greatest club at school, The Doodlers. They draw cartoons and play games! And let’s face it, it really is the best club. I mean, in PS.38, there are clubs like the Knit Pickers, and really, who wants to spend the day knitting? There’s also the Wizards and Witches, who pretend that they have magic powers.   And then there are the Problem Solvers – who wants to spend spare time doing math?  And The Spotlight Club, they sing EVERYTHING with the hopes of being  “discovered.”  Also, there is the School “Beautification” Society, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Jefferson, let’s just say, arch enemy of PS.38. Dee Dee is a really really good drawer. Francis, one of Nate’s best friends, says we should ask her to join the doodlers. Dee Dee is way too dramatic. Take the most dramatic person you know multiply that by 10,000 and you have Dee Dee. Nate says he’s not asking Dee Dee to join the club. Francis just leaves. Teddy’s Nate’s other friend. So they shoot for it. Nate choose evens, so Teddy has odds. One, two, three, shoot! Aw, man! Teddy won! Great, now Nate has to ask Dee Dee.  Nate goes over to ask Dee Dee,  “ I saw that poster you made for the dance, and I thought you might maybe want to…um…”

“ Oh!” she says “ I’d love to go to the dance with you!” Oh no. When they go to the dance there’s a problem in the sprinklers so school is postponed. But this bad. School will still be going on, but at Jefferson.

Seriously! Someone had to pick our School’s enemy! The most inspiring, wonderful, fantastic, great kid, has to go to the worst school! Life there is not the best. Nolan the bully of Jefferson, thinks he’s the best at everything. But not for long. Light bulb! Nate had the most brilliant, bedazzling, radiant, splendid Idea! He would make a new contest, not: football, basketball, soccer, baseball and other things but, the Ultimate Snowdown.

These books cracked me up! It’s about a kid who always gets detention and bad grades and knows he’s born to be great. This book take place in Nate’s school, PS. 38. He’s a sixth grader who loves to have fun! Join Nate in an adventure through embarrassing and exciting moments! It’s a really funny series! I would recommend it to people who read, Sisters, Smile, Diary Of a Wimpy Kid and the Baby Sitters Club also if you like books with comics and humor. I would rate the whole series 5 *’s   it’s a book that you can’t stop reading. I hope you read it. And if you don’t, you’re missing out on a lot!
