I need your “boxes” to be put in my room tomorrow before you leave or they will be counted late. This is a project, so it counts for a large percentage of the quarter’s grade. Email me if you have a very legitimate problem and we can try to find a solution.

Make sure the pictures are each labeled with a number and that the sentences are numbered so that they match the picture that is being described.

For example:
1. Il y a un lit pres de la porte.
Le lit est elegant.

You would also put a number “1″ next to the picture. Paste or tape the sentences on the outside of the box OR you can cut out each set of sentences and put them next to the item.

You must come with either printed out pictures, pictures cut out from a magazine, or another method that you will have already discussed with me.
Do not come to class without these pictures. You will get a late homework slip!

Batteries, fuel cells and solar cells all produce something called direct current (DC). The positive and negative terminals of a battery are always, respectively, positive and negative. Current always flows in the same direction between those two terminals.The power that comes from a power plant, on the other hand, is called alternating current (AC). The direction of the current reverses, or alternates, 60 times per second (in the U.S.) or 50 times per second (in Europe, for example). The power that is available at a wall socket in the United States is 120-volt, 60-cycle AC power.

Waterwheel project

I will be out again on Monday and may be out Tuesday as I am serving on a Jury.
Each team should complete their waterwheels on Monday in class and you all should be working on your info sheets for the waterwheel project I am including the project outline  here
I have looked at you comments and am pleased at the questions and thoughts you have generated.
We will be working with motors when I return.
Continue to research motors on your own, do a google search for Beakman motors.
Here is a great site to help you understand electricity AC and DC current as well as how motors work.

Program Music

The 6th,7th and 8th grade music classes have been examining Program Music. This style is characterized by music that attempts to depict some extra musical quality. For example, Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring,” or Steve Reich’s “Different Trains.”Through several guided listening sessions we have explored how composers use rhythm, dynamics, melody and timbres to depict a variety of non musical elements.Each music class has begun composing a piece of program music that depicts some aspect of New York City.Sixth grade class are making a composition entitled “NYC Subway”Seventh grade classes are composing “NYC Winter”Eighth grade classes are composing “NYC Walk” Each class will perform their pieces through a process called “planned improvisations” during the last week before winter break. Think back to our trip to Williamsburg and the many exhibits you saw there. Think also about the times that you’ve visited museums with your family or with school. 1. Food Celebration Writing Piece: If you have yet to revise your food piece, please do so this weekend. The final writing piece must be on my desk by 8:30 am, Monday morning.

2. Colonial Research Paper Outlines: Core A, the final outlines are due on Tuesday, November 25th. Core B, these are now complete.

3. Social Studies Unit Test #2: Today, you received the review sheet for our second social studies unit test, which will be given on Thursday, December 4th. You should begin the review sheet, which is due on Tuesday, December 2nd.

Study the COLLOQUIAL expressions with AVOIR on page 153. Be ready to answer questions about their meaning and spelling. It may be extra credit on the next verb quiz!

Be ready for another verb quiz (same irregular verbs as the last two quizzes) during your next class.

1. Be sure to finalize your GIVER book review. The final draft is due on Monday, November 17th. Be sure your stapled packet includes the outline template, the first draft (with edits), a peer-editing sheet, and finally the final draft. This final draft should be typed, double-spaced, and in Times New Roman 12 point font. Be sure you have followed all of the guidelines as they appear on the peer-editing worksheet.

2. Please complete chapter 38 in Making Thirteen Colonies. Answer the following questions below in complete sentences. This assignment is due on Tuesday, November 18th.

1.   Identify/ define the following names/ terms:

b.   Olaudah Equiano
c.   Vasco da Gama
d.    Timbuktu
e.   The Virginia Black Code
f.   Mansa Musa

2.   What was the significance of codfish and lumber to New Englanders?

Heat Turbine Info-Sheet Homework

As we discussed in class you are going to create an info-sheet on the heat turbines we are constructing in class. This one page sheet is designed to provide information about the heat turbine and should be designed to communicate this information to an audience of your peers.

Here are the requirements :

The info sheet may be vertical or horizontal in format and should be one sheet of regular paper.

There needs to be an illustration of the heat turbine. This may be a neat drawing or a digital photo.

The diagram or photo needs to be labeled with arrows.

Each labeled part needs to be defined and or explained.

There needs to be an explanation of how this device converts heat energy into mechanical energy. You may want to start your explanation with the chemical reaction!

A title and your name.

These info sheets are designed to inform someone of how the heat energy is converted into mechanical energy. Make sure you use the vocabulary we have been using including: heat energy, mechanical energy, fluid, energy conversion, system, rotary motion
