Homework

As per our discussion today in class, our unit test on chapters 1-6 in Making Thirteen Colonies will be on Tuesday, October 7th. Below is a copy of the review sheet I distributed in class. Please be sure to do this assignment in chunks. Map out a thoughtful time frame using your class planner, then stick to your plan. Make flash-cards as they are needed. Remember, the final review is due in class on Friday, October 3rd.

Making Thirteen Colonies, Chapters 1-6: Review for Unit Test I

The following questions should be answered on a separate sheet of paper. This assignment is due Friday, October 3rd. Part 1 of the test will be given on Tuesday, October 7th,  and Part II on Wednesday, Oct 8th. The test will include a very brief matching section, identifications (just like the homeworks), and short-answer essay questions (also much like the homework).

This first test will cover everything we have done in chapters 1-6 of Joy Hakim’s Making Thirteen Colonies. It will also include material on Powhatan Culture, English Settlement in Virginia, and Pocahontas. So, in addition to reviewing your homework and class notes on chapters 1-6, you should also review our class handouts.

Please begin studying as early as possible! Use old homeworks as your primary study material. You will also need to return to the book to answer many of the questions below. In my opinion, one of the best ways to begin to study for this test is to complete flashcards for the identifications in question #1. To do this, you should revisit previous homeworks, reviewing the edits we made in class to these assignments. Use your homework to help you create detailed flashcards for the identification questions. We will talk in class about additional ways to prepare for this upcoming test.

Questions

1. The people listed below played a key role in the events described in chpts 1-6. Tell who each person was and what each one did that was of importance for this period in our history. Describe in detail.

d. Chief Powhatan
e. John Smith
f. Pocahontas

n. Jamestown
o. wattle and daub
p. Mrs. Thomas Forrest and Anne Burras
q. The Starving Time
r. London Company
s. “gentleman”

Questions 2-10 are short answer questions. Please respond to these questions in paragraph format. You may refer to previous homework assignments, class notes, or the textbook to help you answer these questions.

3. Why were the first settlers in Jamestown so badly prepared to make Jamestown a success?

4. Describe at least 7 characterisitcs of Powhatan culture and life. (Refer to the notes you took on Powhatan culture from the handouts we discussed in class). What was different about this civilization as compared to the European settlers?

6. Describe the reasons Jamestown was such a poor site for a settlement.

7. How did the London Company policy and the nature of the settlers themselves create problems for the Jamestown Settlement?

8. Describe John Smith’s influence on the Jamestown Colony. How did his departure affect Jamestown? Explain in detail.

Giver- chapters 11- 13

Part I.
Read Chapters 11-13 of The Giver. As you read, take notes on the information presented. Be sure to include at least two (2) thought-provoking questions and three (3) vocabulary words. This assignment is due on Monday September 29, 2008.

Part II.
Respond to the following questions:

Using a dictionary, find out the meaning of the words equality and equity. Explain difference between these two words. How do they relate to Jonas’ society?

What does the Giver mean when he says that the society “went to Sameness”(p.84)? Is “Sameness” the absence of difference?

Using a dictionary, find out the meaning of the words honor and power. What does the Giver mean when he says, “I have great honor. So will you. But you will find that that is not the same as power”?

Part III:

Jonas lives in a community that has turned to “Sameness”; however, he is starting to have some discomfort with the whole idea. Select a quote from the reading that you feel explains why Jonas is feeling this way. Write the quote, page number, and explain why you chose that particular quotation.

7th Seminar 6.26.8

undefinedOur first problem of the year is the Canoe Problem that we started in class.  Your homework is to solve the problem up to 10 people (5 on each side).  You must show your solution to 10 people using notation or diagrams of your choice.  Then write at least half a page about patterns and strategies that you noticed while solving these.  You can also predict how the pattern will proceed.  Bring signed contracts to class next week for me to collect.  You should have a seminar folder by then and it should be well stocked with loose graph paper.

Homework

Tonight’s assignment is to complete the reading and questions for chapters 5 & 6 in Making Thirteen Colonies, (see yesterday’s blog entry for specifics). As you know, this homework was assigned yesterday; it is a 2-day assignment, and at this time you should have already started the assignment. Be prepared to hand in a detailed and extensive response by Monday morning, September 29th.

As we move ahead in seventh grade, it becomes increasingly important that you budget your time accordingly. Waiting until Sunday night to complete the aforementioned assignment will result in a difficult night. PLEASE plan ahead accordingly.

Looking ahead (and thinking more about planning in advance), I am announcing that our first social studies test will be on Tuesday, October 7th. This test will cover chapters 1-6 in Joy Hakim’s Making Thirteen Colonies, as well as the classwork we completed on Pocahontas, our Powhatan note-taking exercise, and the worksheet entitled “Early Settlement: A Preview.”

I will distribute an extensive review sheet in class on Monday (September 29th). You will have at least 4 days to complete this review sheet. We will hold our in-class review on Friday, October 3rd. Again, do NOT wait to complete this review sheet the night before it is due! Complete portions of it each night week. We will talk more about this in class on Monday.

You can get a head start by organizing your materials over the weekend. Be sure you have ALL of your old homeworks. Put them in chronological order. Begin reviewing the identifications and questions. Gather your in-class materials together. Reread them.

We will continue this conversation on Monday. Have a great weekend!

Giver -chapter 10

Directions: Answer the following questions in complete sentences. Be sure to respond in a thorough, detailed, and thoughtful manner.

On page 77, the Giver explains, “Simply stated, although it’s not really simple at all, my job is to transmit to you all the memories I have within me. Memories of the past. … It’s the memories of the whole world.”

• What is memory?

• What are the different kinds of memory?

• Why are memories important?

• Where do indiviuals keep their memories? Where do groups of people keep their memories?

• How are memories passed from generation to generation?

• In our society, who decides whose memories are valid and worth saving, telling, or teaching?

• What can we learn from our own memories? From those of others?

• Which of our memories are cherished? Why are others more difficult or troubling?
