Homework

Justices, you are writing your opinion pieces, which will be read to the class Monday morning, June 16th. At this time, you should have the directions on how to write this piece, but if you misplaced the sheet, here it is again:

 Constitution Works – Writing Your Opinion (Justices)

The purpose of your opinion is to explain your decision on the case of the Denver Dispatch versus the United States. Your opinion should be approximately 2 pages, double-spaced, and in 12pt font. Each Justice should practice reading their opinion aloud, as you will present your opinion to the class on Monday morning, June 16th.

Introduction Paragraph

(5 sentences): What are the issues?
*    Name and describe the issues presented to the court in this case: freedom of speech v. national security
*    Discuss the importance of freedom of speech
*    Discuss the importance of national security

Body Paragraph
(5 sentences): The Denver Dispatch’s argument
*    Explain what impressed you the most about the Dispatch’s argument
*    Name one of their arguments. Give a specific quote.
*    Analyze briefly.
*    What made you agree/disagree with them?

Body Paragraph
(5 sentences): The Government’s argument
*    Explain what impressed you the most about the Government’s argument
*    Name one of their arguments. Give a specific quote.
*    Analyze briefly.
*    What made you agree/disagree with them?

Conclusion Paragraph

(5 sentences): Your decision
*    State your decision
*    Choose 1 quote from a previous case that supports your opinion.
*    How does your vote affect the Constitution?

Reminder: We will be traveling to Bear Mountain on Monday. Be sure to dress appropriately and don’t forget to bring a lunch!

THIS IS THE LAST POST FOR THE YEAR!

1)    Study for Friday’s test.

2)   Try number 33 on page 59.  It’s a good volume practice problem.

Here are the answers:

part a)   433.5 cubic inches

part b)   3,468,000 cubic feet

Don’t forget to practice calculating the surface area of cones and spheres using the handout from last Friday. The answers to select questions can be found in the 6/6/08 post.

Homework:

Lawyers for our Constitutional role-play on Thursday, please finalize your arguments and be prepared to hand in a master document by tomorrow, Wednesday, June 11th. You should spend time practicing your arguments, responding to the sample questions I distributed in class today, and finalizing all arguments.

Justices, review your questions and be sure that your first paragraph for your opinion piece is completed. We will begin reading lawyers’ arguments tomorrow and continue writing the rest of the opinion piece.

Habeas Corpus and Guantanamo Bay

Directions: Today we began reading and discussing the 2 articles on Habeas Corpus and Guantanamo Bay in class. Please complete these readings for homework and answer the questions below in complete sentences. Note: there are multiple parts to each question. Be sure to answer all parts. This assignment will be collected tomorrow.

1. What is the Military Commissions Act (MCA) of 2006 and why does it threaten the U.S. Constitution and habeas corpus?

2. What is Guantanamo Bay? Describe in detail.

3. Briefly describe the conditions that O.K. must live in. How does the U.S. government justify treating O.K. this way?

4. Does the U.S. government torture prisoners at Guantanamo Bay? If yes, how does the government avoid U.S. and international laws prohibiting torture? Explain.

3) OPTIONAL: practice some of the cone and sphere surface area questions on the handout from today. Here are a few of the answers:

For cones:

#11 = 30.3 square meters

#14 = 339.1 square inches

#17 = 1881.5 square feet

#20 = 17.3 square inches

For spheres:

#2 = 201 square inches

#6 = 3175.3 square mm

Give your message encrypted with an A-multiplier and B-shift to a classmate.  You may use either paper & pencil or an excel spreadsheet to decrypt each others’ messages.

Also, write a seminar reflection for the year and email it to me at achaney@lrei.org

Think about one problem you have worked on this year that you found particularly satisfying.  Describe the process you went through.  What worked?  What felt good? What was difficult?  What does this say about your problem solving style?  How do you think they year went for you overall?
