7th Grade studies “West Side Story”

This week, 7th grade music classes will begin to study “West Side Story,” the ground-breaking American musical based on “Romeo and Juliet.” Classes will study and sing some of the great songs from the score, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (who also wrote “Into the Woods,” this season’s Middle School musical.) In addition, classes will view the movie, section by section, during music classes.
Touchpoints for students during this unit will include:
Critical viewing and discussion of the dances, choreographed by Jerome Robbins,
Critical viewing and discussion of issues of race, class and immigration brought up in the work
Comparing the characters in “West Side Story” with the original Shakespeare play.

Timeline Project: Road to Revolution

The “Road to Revolution” timeline should illustrate and explain each of the seeds and sparks that ignited the revolutionary movement. It should be creative, informative, and demonstrate a real understanding of the causes of the Revolutionary War. [See guidelines page on left]

Each event on the timeline should contain the following analysis:

1. (a) What is this chapter’s conflict about? Who is involved in this? How is it resolved?
2. (b) Why is this event significant?
3. (c) How does this event reflect a change in the colonists’ or the King’s attitudes toward each other?
4. (d) What have the colonists learned from this event? How has it affected their relationship with England?
5. (e) What are the causes and effects of the event? Why your group believes this event is important to understanding the causes of the Revolutionary War.

The answers to these questions are to be typed and stored in your group’s class folder no later than Friday, May 9th.
