2. Holiday writing piece — interview a grownup about some of the things you do for the holiday. You might sing particular songs, eat a certain food…whatever it is, talk to an adult about it and write a paragraph (6-8 sentences) describing it. Make sure you include detail so the reader gets a feel for your tradition. Also, take a picture and include it on your piece. Spell check and edit — it will go on the bulletin board in the lobby.

3. Watch these two videos on the Crusades, which we will start covering when we get back from break: video one and video two

Also, answer TWO (out of the 7 choices below) questions below after watching the videos. Answer in at least 5-6 sentences each.

1. What does the first historian mean when he says that the crusades were fought by the Christians to purify their souls? How can you connect this with some of the ideas that circulated during the plague?

2. The historian Tariq Ali says that the word crusade, even today, is an electric word for the Muslim people. Why? What does he mean by this?

3. How did the Church use its power to get people to fight in the crusades?

4. Pope Urban II could best be described as…complete this statement in at least 2-3 sentences.

5. How does Pope Urban use Emperor Alexius’s call for help to fight the Turks to help further his (Urban’s) political goals? What did the Crusades allow the Pope and the Church achieve?

6. What religion was becoming the dominant force in the east? How and why was this a threat to the Church?

7. Tariq Ali says “nothing is ever motivated by religion alone.” Why else were the crusaders interested in going on crusade? List at least two reasons (one could be related to religion).
