– Transition/ Concluding sentence
Example Paragraph for Ulysses showing he is not a hero
While Ulysses does perform some heroic acts in the book The Adventures of Ulysses, by Evslin, overall Ulysses’ hero qualities fall short. Ulysses shows determination and focus but his many acts of hubris are not heroic. Ulysses shows excessive pride after blinding the Cyclops, Polyphemus. “ . . . If anyone asks you, it is not Nobody but Ulysses who has done this to you.” Ulysses taunts Polyphemus after he has injured him and causes Poseidon to punish Ulysses and his sailors for this act. A true hero would have tried to defend himself and save his sailors but not shown excessive arrogance and boasted about a savage act.
Example of CNN Hero Paragraph
If you would like to do a paragraph on a personal hero in addition to the CNN paragraph, you will receive extra credit. Both paragraphs should follow the structure below (topic, supporting, textual evidence, clarifying, concluding sentence).
Roy Foster is considered by many to be a modern day hero. He shows dedication and loyalty by working tirelessly to help homeless war veterans find places to live. Roy believes that veterans should be honored people in our society because they have risked their lives by going to war for our country. Roy feels that all veterans are his “Brothers in Arms”, and that “No man (should be) left behind.” Both are well-known expressions among soldiers at war. They mean that soldiers consider each other brothers who must always look after each other. This is why Roy is selfless and puts others’ needs before his own. It is also why he started the “Stand-Down House”, a place where veterans without homes can sleep until they have jobs and homes of their own. It is difficult to imagine what would happen to forgotten veterans without heroes like Roy Foster.
Example of Introduction Paragraph
Heroes are those individuals who are admired by many and who many aspire to be like. Heroes demonstrate bravery and strength in the face of extreme challenge, and sacrifice their own needs for the needs of others. Heroes are also timeless. They can be found in stories from long ago, like Bernard Evslin’s version of The Odyssey, The Adventures of Ulysses, or in today’s news, like Roy Foster of the CNN Heroes series. Both Ulysses and Roy Foster exhibit numerous heroic qualities.
