NO  HOMEWORK   :)

No Quiz this week, unless…

  • If you did poorly in the last quiz you will have to re-do the quiz this week.  Make sure you talk to me to set-up a time to take it.

What ’s happening in P.E.

The P.E. classes are in full swing. Both the 5th and 6th grades are following the same path. Once per week they do sports. The sport in season is soccer. The class has worked on skills such as passing, dribbling and shooting. They have moved on to playing games in the gym.
They also have been doing fitness training in preparation for the physical fitness test which will be given starting in January. The test includes sit-ups, pull-ups, flexability, sprinting and the mile run.
The third time they come to the gym, they get to play games. These large group games are fun for them and gives them a chance to work on their teamwork and sportsmanship.
They have also been using the climbing wall. This serves to build their confidence and is fun to do.
Next up in sports will be mini units on football, volleyball and perhaps a game or two of Quidditch.

Simulation Update

Many of you will be advancing from TRIBE (hundreds of people) to CHIEFDOM (thousands of people) this week. CHIEFDOMS MAY SPREAD INTO ONE UNOCCUPIED AREA NEXT TO THEIR AREA.

Any pair (BAND, TRIBE OR CHIEFDOM) may wage war on another group.

WAGE WAR - you can wage war on any group next to you (even if they’re in a different skills group). Choose an amount of beans to wager (don’t tell the other group how many). Whoever wagers more beans will win. The group that shows fewer beans, loses all the beans they wagered. The winning group loses half of their wagered beans. The winning group takes over the area and the resources. The losing group can either move to a nearby area or stay as servants to the winners.

As a chiefdom, you may do the following:

1. DEVELOP TECHNOLOGY - EARN 10 BEANS! Research an irrigation system to use in your area. Tell on a notecard what the system is and how it will help your crops. (ONLY AVAILABLE IF YOU HAVE NOT WAGED WAR.)

2. CREATE ART - EARN 10 BEANS! Use clay, paint, reeds (paper) or yarn to create pottery, statues, stamp seals, paintings or weavings. (ONLY AVAILABLE IF YOU HAVE NOT WAGED WAR.)

3. USE MINERALS - EARN 10 BEANS! Find out what you can use your minerals for. Write it up on a notecard.

10/23 Simulation

Simulation Update

Many of you will be advancing from TRIBE (hundreds of people) to CHIEFDOM (thousands of people) this week.  This means you now have some choice to make.

1. WAGING WAR-  You can wage war on any group next to you (even if they’re in a different Skills group).  Choose an amount of beans to wager (don’t tell the other group how many). Whoever wagers more beans will win. The group that shows less beans looses all of them.  However, even the group that wins looses half their beans.  The winning group takes over the losing area and all their resources.  The losing group can either move or become servants of the winner.

2 . DEVELOP TECHNOLOGY- Earn 10 beans!  Research an irrigation system to use in your area. Write on a notecard what the irrigation system is and how you would use it.  (Only available if you have not waged war.)

3. CREATE ART- Earn 10 beans! Use clay, reeds(can use paper), or yarn to create pottery, statues, seals, or weavings. (Only available if you have not waged war.)

4. MINERALS- Earn 10 beans! Find out what types of things you can do with the minerals available to you. Write the information on a notecard.

5th grade music assessment

5th grade music assessment quiz

Henry will be giving each 5th grade class a short assessment quiz on Friday, October 26th. This quiz will be the basis for a portion of each students’ 1st quarter music report. The quiz is based on the music theory sheets that are in each students’ music folder, in their binder. Here is a list of what has been handed out to each student:

CHAPIN’S LAW #1 - “THERE CAN BE NO MUSIC WITHOUT SILENCE” Vocabulary words about choral singing

CHAPIN’S LAW #2 - “EVERYTHING STARTS WITH THE BEAT” About the Beat

CHAPIN’S LAW #3 - “LOTS TO LEARN IN THE BEGINNING, SMOOTH SAILING LATER!” Note values, rests, time signature, measures, and barlines

CHAPIN’S LAW #4 - “THE BEAUTY IS IN THE MELODY” about the staff, note placement, and the treble clef.

If any student would like an extra copy, please have them see me in the music room and I will provide it to them.
