Grabber:

In Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, first published in 1985, you are faced with a desisve question:  Can a six year old save the world? Can a pointless game help him keep the world safe?

Plot Summary:

Ender is a third. Thirds are dreaded in this dystopic society, as any childern after the second are frowned upon. When government officials ask to take Ender away to military training in space, his parents are almost glad. They are conditioned to dislike thirds, and they don’t realize that Ender is more than just a third. On the shuttle ride up, Ender notices that he is treated differently. Even though he is just six, he is a genius. When you delve deeper into the book, you forget that Ender is just six. He journeys into space and is trained to become a better battlefield leader. He learns how to predict an opponent’s move, and is made to play a competitve game that teaches him how to succeed in battle. The scale of what is he is doing is unimaginable. What nobody realises is that Ender is about to be the most important person of all time. Will he be able to stop an alien force that is larger than the earth’s entire population?

Reading Strategy (with textual evidence)

Being a third, Ender is bullied by his brother and peers. He finally gets fed up after being harrased, and  he confronts his oppressor. He doe an unusual way, one that promptes the government to look into his ablities. On page “Then why did you do it?”

“He had his gang there,” Ender said.

“So, does this excuse anything?”

“No.”

“Tell me why you kept on kicking him. You had already won the fight.”

“Knocking him down one the first fight. I wanted to win the next ones, too. So they’d leave me alone.”

When Ender says this, he displays a knowledge of stategy. The biggest war of all time is about to begin, but to Ender, it is just a game. This shows that Ender is an exeptional person, both metally and physicly. The book is about the balance of game and reality from Ender’s perspective. It is about using games to prepare for reality, but also using games to mask reality.

Recommendation:

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Hunger Games series. It is the same type of addictive writing that gets you hooked. The dystopic setting is extremely intriguing and keeps you thinking throughout the entire book.

This is my book talk. It has grammatical and spelling errors, but the way I presented it was more important to me, as none of my classmates will ever see this. I really enjoyed writing my book talk.
