Suzanne Collins’ MockingJay Book review

[WARNING:] [DO NOT READ THIS ARTICLE IF YOU HAVE NOT READ CATCHING FIRE:]

MockingJay  is a very interesting book. I say that because last seen in Catching Fire, Katniss Everdeen almost gets herself killed and finds out that all of the people in the latest hunger games sacrificed themselves for Katniss not Peeta Mellark. Katniss made a deal with Haymitch to save Peeta instead of herself. Haymitch is a drunk man who is Katniss’ and Peeta’s tutor for the hunger games. The whole plot of MockingJay is to overthrow the Capitol. Peeta however, gets captured by President Snow, (an evil elderly man who rules the Capitol) at the end of Catching Fire. I felt that out of the three, MockingJay was the best because it throws a whole lot of information in the beginning of the book. A few people in the comments of my Catching Fire review said that I gave away too much, but this will be different because I am trying my hardest to not give “spoilers,” as you folk may say it. Anyway, The true core of the rebellion is District 13. That district is kept secret to all of the other districts because District 13 and the Capitol had a blackmail-like deal which if District 13 is kept secret to the other districts neither of them will attack each other. The Capitol does not attack District 13 because of their nuclear weapons… until now. I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars because as said before, I just simply love how Suzanne writes this novel with the storyline always from Katniss’ perspective. I would recommend this book for people who could handle or think they can handle the other books in the series (The Hunger Games and Catching Fire).

      • You to, they shouldn’t read this because if i’m about to start THG i’m going to say there are spoiler. I would recomend the review for people who have red CF. SO I”M SAYING YOU’RE WRONG!!!! :p 🙂

  1. I think I will read the book because I saw the movies for the other two. Your book review is really well written and unlike your other book review it doesn’t have a lot of spoilers.

    • No, you should read the first and second book first, there’s a lot more dicriptiveniss in the books and you understand it more.

  2. Oliver, I think you have done a nice job of including important plot details without giving away any spoilers. You mention that you enjoy hearing the story through the perspective of Katniss. What else about the writing strikes you?

As we discussed in class, many people feel that this series is not appropriate for children. What do you think about this? I know you enjoyed the book, but you also mention that you need to be able to “handle it.” What do you mean by this?

    • I think for the writing another cool thing is how descriptive in Suzanne’s writing of MockingJay.

Hmmmm…. I know that people say that this series is not appropriate for children but, this is a book review blog. Reviews can be bad or good, right or wrong. Also, what happened to freedom of speech.

For handling, I mean if you ever saw the movies they can be a bit violent. and in movies they are all the same rating because you see it visually. But in books, it depends on how you see it, the characters can be Mickey Mouse if you like Mickey Mouse. The characters can all be dogs if you like dogs. so honestly, by handling I mean by some parts being sad and some of the parts might flip your smile upside down.

      Thank you for my F.R.E.E.D.O.M. O.F. S.P.E.E.C.H.

      • Oliver,

I do love your enthusiasm. I really do. You make good points.

We are not saying people can’t read these books. We are saying that we would like to keep the blog to books that are written for elementary school age students. The Hunger Games series isn’t. There are hundreds of other great books out there that you’d like. We even gave you some recommendations the other day.

Not to mention, if everyone is writing reviews on all the same books, we aren’t really going to be building that diverse a selection of book reviews on the blog, are we?
