Documentation Post #3 (Week 2)

Carine Roitfeld
“Mademoiselle C” movie poster

Alas, Carine!! Since the first day I came across her and her work, I was immediately drawn to her. There is something about her stance on womenhood, liberation, and expression, that captivated me beyond “where she worked for” and “what she did”.

Beyond her signature heavy eyeshadow and “tres cool” French accent, stood a women of a particular age who recognized that we were moving from a time in which fashion was limited to exclusivity to a place of rapid access through social media and the modern day influencer.

I wanted to know more. Roitfeld was the feature in her very own documentary, Mademoiselle C, which followed her around the streets of New York City and Paris as she worked to launch her debut fashion journal, CR Fashion Book. It was her debut solo piece, after parting ways from Vogue as a senior editor. Mademoiselle C has cameos by the iconic Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford, and many many other respected people in her circle as they advise her, goosh over her new grandbaby, reminisce, and take on Fashion Week.

What I loved about her documentary was the look into what it took to launch her fashion journal. Being someone who had a substantial standing within the industry, it was telling how she still had to worry and factor in concepts such as budgeting, appeal, and backings.
