My idea for my second critical reflection came to me while I was in my photography cohort meeting. In this meeting it was the first time that I shared my paintings rather than photos and I went on to explain my unease with my paintings. I came up with an idea of how I am going to share my paintings for the final project. I documented stages throughout the painting process of each painting. I am taking pictures at significant moments, and I plan to compile in a mini-movie. When I was reviewing the photos in my cohort meeting, I found that I liked earlier stages of some of my paintings rather than the end result. Sometimes I get stuck wanting to replicate the photo exactly rather than making it slightly more abstract and from my point of view.
Below are two photos from different stages in my painting.
The first photo is from the earlier stages of process and the second is the most recent version. I have been painting nearly everyday and that involves five hours straight of painting. I learned that painting in quarantine is much harder than when I can leave and come back to it. The taking-a-step-back process of studio art or any art really, is something I never thought much about until now. Looking at these two snapshots, I am going to start paying more attention to the stages in the process going forward.
