Project Name: | Wellness Exploration |
Essential Question
What is wellness and how can I maximize my own wellness and the wellness of others? |
Statement of Definition
For my senior project I will explore how different practices, such as cooking, reading, interacting with family, practicing art, going outside vs not outside impact my wellness and the wellness of my family. |
Overview: Describe your topic and project to the committee.
While I previously wanted to explore and display my different passions within a magazine I made, the time of Coronavirus has completely changed my perceptions on what is important to pursue. With my mom being a doctor, currently going to fight the virus everyday wellness has been my top priority. This has made me interested in not only the significance of physical health but also how daily practices contribute to one’s well being. I also became interested in this topic because of the limited resources I have to pursue a different subject. During my project I will learn how to cook new foods, read new books, exercise, and complete other practices with an organized but also inspiring daily schedule. In response to these practices, my documentation plan will be important in terms of reflecting on how each activity has made me feel and how society believes it contributes to wellness. I will also be taking “The Science of Well Being” Yale Coursera Course in hopes of maximizing my own well being. This will give me context as to how my practices are improving my daily life, while also giving me a challenging and scientific perspective to the project. For me, this project evokes the creativity from the 4c’s the most because I have found a way to utilize my surroundings to the best of my ability in this time. |
How will you measure your success?
It is hard to measure “success” in terms of wellness, as this looks different for everyone. However, I think I indicate success if at the end I have built a foundation of a happier and healthier life, and am able to bring new perspective to the conversation around wellness that seems to have taken a big portion of society today. Another indication of success is completing the Yale Coursera course, finishing the books I set out to read and cooking many recipes. |

Daily Plan & Schedule
I will wake up and exercise everyday as a way to see how this impacts my wellness. Depending on when my Cohort meeting is I will either do this before or after. I will cook nutritious meals based on recipes that get more complex as I progress. After I eat, I will either complete my hours of reading for the day, take my hour walk with my dog (to further explore how pets contribute to wellness) and depending on my dad’s work schedule, at some point throughout the day we will complete part of the Coursera Yale class together (because he wants to do it with me). I will also watch a portion of documentaries from my selection and spend time researching recipes, and reading articles I find about wellness in society. While it would be ideal to have the exact same schedule everyday, I also want to have some room for inspiration (while still completing my weekly hour requirement). I will also spend time in the day journaling (separate from my documentation plan) to further my mental wellness.
Here is an example of what my schedule would look like: 10:30-11:30 cook a nutritious meal 11:30-1:00 read one of the books 1:00-2:00 work on the online class 2:00-3:00 watch a documentary from my list This schedule would and will vary day by day but this is just an idea of what I will be doing. |
Documentation Plan
I will journal on a document about how the practices I have completed have changed, built on or supported my previous conceptions on wellness. This perfectly fits into my project because it builds on the reflection component that is essential to exploring what wellness is. Without this reflection, the tasks I am doing could seem not connected but with this reflection and journaling they will progressively become more purposeful, intentional and part of my daily routine. After reflecting I will post some photos and a little write up to the senior project blog. |
Backup Plan
This is my backup plan. The reason I am so confident in this project is because it depends entirely on me, and my family’s resources, not the school or an outside organization. The only problem I could see arising is if I don’t have access to the food that I need to fully explore recipes I find. I think this can become a simple modification to my project where I make recipes (altered) through the lens of the Coronavirus time. |
