Onaje #2: Capturing Gesture

I feel like I’m getting the gist of what I should be capturing while figure drawing. Draftsmen such as Glenn Vilppu and Mike Mattesi have shown me that I shouldn’t just look for contour lines or the spine to capture anatomy. There are imaginary C and S curves that can describe the gesture of the pose better than the model themselves. I’ve also practiced exaggerating the pose while trying to stay proportionate.

I feel like I am getting a good understanding of the back muscles. They are a very difficult group of forms to decipher, but I feel like I’m getting the hang of it.

Shauna and James gave me some artists to study for my coronavirus piece. James told me to lean in to the dramatic, fantastical nature of my composition. I hope to do so, without being too heavy handed or too explanatory. There’s a fine line I will have to walk while conceptualizing this piece.
